Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 25 April 2000 For Use: Immediately |
|
The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr. Alex MacDonald, has written to the Scottish Executive supporting moves to abolish warrant sales. The Executive is due to debate the issue later this week.
Speaking today, Mr. MacDonald said:
"In the Western Isles we have established procedures which allow us to pursue debts in a reasonable manner. Whilst we will always continue to pursue debts owed to the Comhairle it is my belief that this should always be done in a fair manner, taking into account individual circumstances. In practical terms, Warrant Sales amount to little more than an exercise in humiliation which should have no place in a civilised society. I would say to anyone who has problems in paying their Council Tax or their rent to contact us as early as possible. The Comhairle will listen and whilst it is essential for people to pay their bills, the Comhairle will do everything possible to ease the situation for those who are genuinely having difficulty."
