Telephone Sales Warning

Trading Standards are warning consumers to be wary of giving telephone sales companies bank or credit card account details.

Many companies now use the telephone to sell their goods. Recent examples in the Western Isles have included high pressure sales of mobile phone contracts, fitted kitchens, Timeshares and even double glazing products.

The Trading Standards section of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have compiled the following list of Do’s and Don’ts to help consumers deal with Telephone Sales.

Telephone Sales - Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

1. If you are in doubt about the seller just say ‘No thank you’ and replace the handset.

2. Find out the name and address of the seller's company.

3. Ask yourself:

a) Do I want or need this;

b) Can I afford it;

c) Can I get it cheaper elsewhere;

d) Do I know and trust the seller

4. Ask the seller what will happen if you change your mind. In some cases you will have a seven day cooling off period, during which you can cancel the contract.

5. Ask for more time if you’re not sure - a reputable seller will understand.

6. Pay by credit card if the goods cost more than £100. The credit card company will give you some protection.

Don’t:

1. Agree to buy anything until you’ve checked prices elsewhere.

2. Let the seller pressurise you into making a snap decision.

3. Let persuasive salesmen convince you to buy things you don’t need.

4. Don’t give your bank account or credit card details to a company you haven’t heard of before.

If you regularly receive unwanted calls from telephone sales companies you can ask to register with the Mailing Preference Service at:
