Comhairle Confirms Commitment To Secure Status

The Gaelic Development Sub-Committee at its meeting today confirmed their commitment to seeking secure status for the Gaelic language and will continue to work in partnership with Comunn na Gaidhlig in its efforts to achieve this. The Sub--Committee recognise the valuable work carried out by Gaelic organisations in the Western Isles in maintaining, developing and promoting the Gaelic language:

Mr Donald M Mackay, Chairman of the Gaelic Development Sub-Committee, said:

"The Comhairle is firm in its commitment to seeking secure status for the Gaelic language and there has never been any move away from that position. It is important for this Committee and the Comhairle to recognise that there is much to be welcomed in the inclusion of Gaelic in the Education Bill as it is a significant step forward down the road to secure status.

Much has been achieved over the last 15 years through the effective co-operation among the various Gaelic Organisations. This was clearly demonstrated on the historic day of the Gaelic Debate at the Scottish Parliament when the political parties were seen to be united in their desire to ensure that Gaelic would continue to thrive and prosper, so that future generations would have access to a living language, heritage and culture.

I would now appeal to all sides in this matter to work together in unity for the best interests of the language. Our culture is too valuable and the future of the language is too important for Gael to be pitched against Gael."
