The Convener and Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar today met with representatives of Lews Castle College to discuss ways that the Comhairle can support the College following the announcement last week about the College's finances.
As a result there will be closer working between the two organisations particularly at officer level through the Economic Development section of the Comhairle.
Mr. Alex MacDonald, the Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, said:
"The HISP programme is an area which will be of great interest for both ourselves and the College and there is definitely scope for working closely together on matters where the islands and our communities will stand to benefit."
The Comhairle will also continue to make representations to the Funding Council outlining the plight facing colleges of further education in island areas which have particular difficulties in meeting educational needs within current resources.
Speaking following today's meeting, Mr David Green, Principal of Lews Castle College, said:
"The College is pleased to be working co-operatively with the Comhairle and we will continue to do so to support community and economic development throughout the islands.
In addition, links between the Comhairle and the College will be strengthened through the Outreach Centres and the Communty Learning Strategy.
Vice-Convener Roddy Murray said:
"Community based learning is an area where the Comhairle is playing a lead role in helping to co-ordinate facilities and community needs. We will continue to work with the College on developing this and in joint working where we can".
