Economic Workshop - Barra 27 June 2000

"PARTNERSHIP AND OPPORTUNITY FOR THE ISLES"

Today in Barra Western Isles development agencies agreed to set up an economic forum with the specific aim of producing a Western Isles Business Plan.

Donald Macinnes, Chief Executive of Scotland Europa said

"I am delighted that these agencies are pulling together to produce this all inclusive Business Plan which will project a positive and forward looking image of the Hebrides. Today proved to be an extremely positive day With all the agencies and sectoral representatives contributing to the creation of this joint approach to future economic opportunities."

The Plan will address the sectors with the greatest potential - tourism, information technology, fishing and fish farming. It will include social and cultural issues and will seek to develop the new areas of renewable alternative energy such as wind, tidal and wave power.

The workshop was called to discuss and agree policies, strategic developments and actions which would significantly improve the socio-economic position of the Western Isles over the next 5 -10 years and identify the most appropriate delivery mechanisms for economic development in the Western Isles involving the public agencies and private partners.

Donald MacLean, Chairman of the Development Services Committee of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar added

"I am extremely pleased with the outcome of the discussions and the level of commitment shown by the agencies for such a positive approach. I look forward to the setting up of this forum and see it as the perfect vehicle to progress development opportunities in this area.

If the commitment shows at the workshop can continue then there is every hope of achieving significant progress in providing sustainable and interesting jobs for the people of the Western Isles. The other aspect of the day which was particularly satisfying was the contribution from the representatives of the private sector. Their involvement in the Plan is critical if all the collective aspirations are to be achieved."

Western Isles Enterprise Board Member and Freelance Broadcasting Consultant, Murdo MacLennan agreed that such a forum and Plan is essential for the future well being of the Western Isles.

In keeping with Western Isles Enterprise's existing objectives, effective partnerships which bring together public and private sectors are essential to focus resources on key areas as identified at the workshop.

There is a degree of urgency in all of this but it is encouraging that Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Health Board, Western Isles Enterprise and Scottish Homes have already initiated this type of community planning and consultation process which can be built upon.

This workshop in Barra, emphasising partnership and opportunity approach, gives a new impetus to economic development in the Western Isles.
