NATIONAL CONSUMER WEEK 2000

National Consumer Week runs from 16 - 20 October and is a week set aside each year to focus on consumer issues. This year's theme is e-commerce.

While many consumers are discovering the advantages of shopping for goods and services through the Internet, it is important however to appreciate that there may be pitfalls, in shopping using this new technology.

On the 31 of October this year new legilsation comes into force which gives consumers extra protection when purchasing by mail order, telephone, fax or through the Internet.

New rules will govern the information which the consumer must have available before they decide to purchase. Also consumers will in most cases, have the unconditional right to cancel orders within 7 days of the contract being agreed or the goods being delivered.

The Trading Standards Institute have issued guidance for consumers when shopping through the Internet. This site is linked to the Comhairle's web page by clicking on: ***TS CENTRAL***
