Mobile Phone Sales Warning

Mobile Phones may be one of the most popular gifts for Christmas but Trading Standards Officers at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are warning consumers about companies who 'cold call' and offer 'free' or 'free trials' of mobiles.

Recent examples in the Islands have included people who have been told that they have won a phone as a reward for completing a survey.

During the course of the conversation the consumer is asked for bank account details, for setting up direct debit mandates.

The advice from Trading Standards Officers is:

Do not give personal information, particularly bank account details to unknown companies over the phone (or on the internet).

Ask yourself if you really want the item being offered. The phone may sound as if it's free but you may have to sign a lengthy hire agreement and then be subject to monthly service charges.

Always compare prices and services with what other similar companies are offering. Depending on your pattern of useage, a 'pay as you go' service mobile phone may be more economical than being committed to a service contract.
