Commenting on the latest GRO population estimates which show a 1.4% drop in
the population of the Western Isles, the Chairman of Development Services on
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr. Donald Maclean, said:
“These latest estimates are a sad confirmation of the depopulation problems
facing the Western Isles. Urgent action is needed to address these problems
and a start could be made by government in working with the Comhairle and other
agencies in creating an Energy Innovation Zone in the islands. Such a move would
reverse the exodus from our islands and help bring about the economic prosperity
that our communities deserve.”
