Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 26April 2001 For Use: Immediately | |
In response to the announcement by the Minister for Environment and Rural Development, Ross Finnie, regarding the probable easing of restrictions on the movement of animals in the Provisionally Free Area as from the 1st May, the Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr. Alex MacDonald, said:
The Comhairles aim has always been to minimise the risk of spreading
Foot and Mouth to the islands. As from the 1st May it looks as though it will
be possible to move animals from the Provisionally Free Areas of the mainland
to the islands. This will enable away wintered animals to return and Crofters
Commission Supply Bulls to be brought over. In addition, animals will be able
to be brought straight to slaughter.
Whilst some will welcome this development I would suggest that people consider
other options, including compensation through the Intervention Board. The less
animals that come into the islands, the less risk. Although the risk of bringing
the infection in by moving animals within the Provisonally Free Area is very
small, the risk can be reduced still further if the number of animal movements
is kept to an absolute minimum.
