Comhairle Outlines Improvements In Home Care

Comhairle nan EIlean Siar's Social Work Committee has set out a range of service developments to support care at home in the Western Isles.

The service improvements are in the areas of post-hospital home care, home based respite care, day care and Occupational Therapy.

Chairman of Social Work, Mrs Mairi Bremner, said: "Support for carers and the extension of home-based support can reduce the requirement for traditional long-stay residential care. Planned respite, extended day care and access to emergency help can all have the effect of delaying, sometimes by years, the point where full residential care is needed."

It was also agreed that an extra £15,000 be made available for the installation of minor equipment and adaptations with a value of £500 or less outwith the Disabled Grant system currently in place.

The service improvements follow the community wide survey carried out by the Comhairle which strongly underlined the wishes of the vast majority of people to receive care in their own homes for as long as possible.
