Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 5 June 2001 For Use: Immediately | |
Statement by Donald MacLean, Chairman Development Services, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
The implications for the staff at Iomarts Stornoway netcenter, which currently employs 55 people, are as yet uncertain following the companys decision to make up to 50 staff redundant in a downsizing of their business operations in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stornoway.
Commenting on the news, Donald MacLean, Chairman of the Comhairles Development Services Committee said, This has come as a great shock and my immediate concern is for the staff currently employed by Iomart in Stornoway. While we dont know at this stage how many jobs will be lost, I hope that the company will do everything in its power to minimise the number of redundancies in Stornoway and I welcome the process of consultation launched by the company. The Comhairle recognises the importance of Iomart to the Western Isles economy as a major employer and investor. I will be pressing for a meeting at the highest level with officials of Western Isles Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise who provided considerable sums of public money to Iomart, and the Minister for the Highland and Islands Alastair Morrison for immediate action to resolve this latest crisis for the Western Isles economy. In the meantime the Comhairle will do everything in its power to work with the company and other agencies to try to safeguard the future of the current operation in Stornoway.
