Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 23 July 2001 For Use: Immediately | |
"Whilst of course, we are disappointed that the Marine Energy Research
Centre is not to be based in the Western Isles, we welcome the official recognition
from the Scottish Executive of the potential of island areas in the development
of renewable energy.
We are continuing to press the Western Isles, with its massive natural resources, as the logical centre for research and development into many aspects of renewables as well as the production, storage and transmission of renewable energy.
Indeed, this week we are meeting with the DTI Minister Brian Wilson and a high powered delegation from the DTI to discuss the Comhairle's Energy Innovation Zone proposals. We remain confident that the Government and the Scottish Executive recognise the potential of the Western Isles as a green powerhouse and that there will be opportunities arising for the Western Isles."
