Comhairle Takes Steps Towards 'Green Fleet'

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Transportation Committee has agreed in principle to an alternative vehicle fuels pilot project for vehicles in the Western Isles.

It is intended that the pilot scheme will be carried out in partnership with Scottish Executive.

The proposed scheme will promote alternative fuels for vehicles (LPG and electric) in the Western Isles and in particular within the Comhairle fleet.

The Committee also adopted a policy of 'promoting low emission cost effective alternative fuels when considering future vehicle requirements.'

Transportation Chairman, Cllr. Norman A. Macdonald, said: "This is an exciting project and we will be discussing firm proposals with the Scottish Executive in the very near future. Such a scheme will complement the Comhairle's progress in other areas of alternative energy such as the Western Isles Alternative and Renewable Energy Project (WIAREP) and the EIZ initiative.
This pilot project will be a significant step forward in energy related activities for the Comhairle and the Western Isles."

Further details on the pilot project will be brought to the next meeting of Transportation.
