New Drive To Raise Levels Of Literacy and Numeracy

Two staff from the Scottish Executive's Adult Literacy 2000 National Training Project were in Stornoway on Friday and Saturday last week to start a process which will result in ten local volunteers being trained as literacy and numeracy tutors.

The training was initiated by the Community Education Service as part of a new drive to raise levels of literacy and numeracy throughout Scotland. Community Education have opened a drop-in learning facility based in the Community Meeting Room on the bottom floor of the Town Hall building in Stornoway and the 'Western Isles Learning Shop' (open Mondays & Fridays 11am - 4 pm) offers free, flexible and confidential help for people who want to improve their reading, writing, spelling or number work.

The volunteer tutors will receive nine more days training over the next two months and will then offer tuition either in the Learning Shop or in community facilities throughout Lewis & Harris.
