Getting the Bigger Picture

People in the Western Isles will have access to 'blockbuster' type films following a decision by Conhairle nan Eilean Siar's Arts and Leisure Committee to reduce charges for the Town Hall in Stornoway and Lionacleit School in Benbecula.

It is hoped that both venues will now be able to attract a commercial mobile cinema showing films over a 3 or 4 evening period each month in Stornoway and 2 or 3 evenings per month at Lionacleit.

A problem in the past in bringing commercial films to the islands has been the cost of letting charges for the hire of facilities. However the Committee's decision will reduce charges, making it more commercially viable to show films on a regular basis.

Under the proposals, there would also be a benefit for voluntary sector organisations who could provide stewarding services and retain profits from the sale of soft drinks and snacks.

The Comhairle's Chairman of Arts and Leisure, Cllr. Alasdair Macrae, said, "This move will allow more of the 'big films' to come to the islands and will be an improvement in leisure services, allowing people of all ages more opportunities to enjoy a film. There should also be spin-off benefits for restaurants and other businesses as well as voluntary organisations."
