Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 05 October 2001 For Use: Immediately | |
Four grant applications have been approved this week to establish youth cafés in Back, Leurbost, Pairc and Daliburgh. This is the first allocation of grants from the funding provided by the Comhairle and the Scottish Executive to help develop a network of youth cafés in the Western Isles.
Chairman of Policy and Finance Chairman Cllr. Roddy Murray, said: "This
is good news for the Western Isles and is a further extension of improvements
in services for young people in the Western Isles. The younger members of our
community have much to offer but in the past they have suffered from a lack
of facilities".
The grants will contribute towards furniture, PCs and other equipment identified
by young people in the areas as what they wanted for the local youth café.
Each youth café will also receive a free internet ready PC that the Comhairle
was successful in securing from a Scottish Executive programme that aims to
promote internet access in community settings.
Background
The funding for youth cafes is as a result of a successful bid by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar to the Scottish Executive's 'Make Our Communities Safer' challenge fund.
The bid to the challenge fund for £25,000 to help develop a network of
youth cafes was approved by the Scottish Executive and the Comhairle has agreed
matching funding of £25,000. The project has been led by the Comhairle
but is the subject of a partnership between the Western Isles Health Board,
the Northern Constabulary, Working for Communities Pathfinder Project, Social
Inclusion Partnership areas and the Voluntary Sector.
