Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 09 October 2001 For Use: Immediately | |
Representatives from the Western Isles will be travelling to Pendleton USA in November as part of a marketing initiative aimed at promoting angling holidays in the islands to Americans.
As part of the twinning process in April 2001 between the Western Isles and Pendleton, South Carolina, USA, discussions were held on prospects for angling holidays to the Western Isles for USA citizens.
Two business people from North and South Carolina have since undertaken an exploratory visit to the Western Isles, in August this year. They fished in the Uists and Lewis for trout, sea trout and salmon, with support from the Comhairle, Western Isles Fisheries Trust (and member estates), Southern Isles Amenity Trust and others interested in the concept.
The plans for angling tourism to the Western Isles will be further discussed during the twinning visit to Stornoway by the 35 strong party from Pendleton, scheduled for March 2002, with a view to an angling party coming in Summer 2002.
To support the marketing of the enterprise in the USA, representatives of the
Southern Isles Amenity trust and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will travel to Pendleton
in November 2001 to make presentations to a variety of civic, business and community
groups. It is anticipated that as well as angling, there is scope to promote
other visits associated with Western Isles culture and wildlife.
