Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 09 October 2001 For Use: Immediately | |
Comhairle Outlines Transport Issues to Depute Minister
Representatives of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are meeting with Deputy Transport and Planning Minister Lewis Macdonald over the next three days.
Chairman of Transportation Norman A. Macdonald, said:
"We are pleased to welcome the The Minister to the Western Isles where
he will have the opportunity to see a number of transport initiatives during
his time here. On Wednesday, we will be crossing the Eriskay Causeway to see
the Sound of Barra Terminal works. We will be impressing upon him the need to
complete the Integrated Transport Project, including the provision of a new
ferry and the completion of road links which will allow for freight transport.
We are optimistic that the Minister will recognise that the completion of this
project will be a significant improvement in transport links within the islands.
Also on the agenda will be the need for significant improvements in our roads
network. Our aim is to have first class road links stretching the length of
the islands, improving freight transport, opening up new markets and helping
to sustain the improvements in economic development brought about by the Comhairle's
programme of fixed links. We look forward to continuing to work with the Scottish
Executive on improving transport and transport infrastructure in the islands".
