Comhairle Disappointment At OFT Report

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has noted the findings of the OFT report on petrol and diesel pricing in Lewis and Harris.

Environmental Services Chairman Angus Nicolson said: "I am somewhat surprised at the findings of the OFT Report. To state that pump prices in Lewis and Harris are not excessive is not a view that the majority of people on the island would share.

Whilst it is to be welcomed that the OFT does not consider competition law has been broken, the bottom line is that consumers and business in the islands are paying a lot more for fuel than those on the mainland. Indeed, the Comhairle's Price Watch figures show that the annual cost to consumers in the Western isles is over a million pounds higher than those on the mainland. The average motorist in the Western Isles pays in excess of £100 per year for their fuel.

The Comhairle will now want to study this OFT Report in some detail and we will respond more fully once we have done so."
