Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 19 October 2001 For Use: Immediately | |
The Convener and Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have congratulated the organisers of Mod 2001 on the success of this year's event.
Convener Alex MacDonald said: "By any standards this has been a hugely successful event and I congratulate An Comunn and all those who have worked to make Mod 2001 such a special celebration. The Western Isles has been a very lively place over the past week and visitors from around the world have enjoyed a truly Hebridean welcome from all parts of the islands. The Comhairle is pleased to have been able to assist with this celebration of the Gaelic language and culture which has also produced a considerable economic boost for the Western Isles. The baton is now passed on to Largs for next year's event and I wish them every success."
Vice-Convener Roddy Murray said: "The Western Isles Mod has been a fantastic
success. I understand that attendances at events has increased from last year
and that there was a record number of children's entries for this year's competition.
Given the considerable distance involved for many people in travelling to this
year's event that is a great achievement. The Western Isles is the heartland
of the Gaelic culture and the success of the past week demonstrates the massive
potential that exists through the future development of the language. The Comhairle
will continue to be at the forefront of that development".
