Youth Enterprise Development Officer
A First For Comhairle & PSYBT

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have appointed Jane Campbell as it’s first full-time Youth Enterprise Development Officer, with financial assistance from the Highlands & Islands Special Transitional Programme (HISTP). Jane will be responsible for delivering a wide range of advice and financial assistance packages, aimed at raising awareness of entrepreneurship and enterprise throughout the Western Isles amongst the 14 to 30 age group.

Jane Campbell The remit of the post is wide-ranging with responsibility for assisting in the development of youth enterprise through several national and locally-based initiatives. As well as being the new Regional Manager for the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT), Jane has taken over as Shell LiveWIRE co-ordinator for the Western Isles. In addition she will be working with a wide network of business and agency contacts, including Western Isles Enterprise and the Schools Industry Liaison section of the Comhairle’s Education department to deliver the main objectives of the post, which is ultimately to increase the number of local youngsters setting up and continuing to run their own businesses throughout the Western Isles.

Jane was born and brought up in Stornoway and, after leaving college, spent a short time in Glasgow with Strathclyde Regional Council. She returned to Stornoway and was employed by Stornoway Pier & Harbour Commission for 6 years and then spent 4 years with the Careers Service. Jane has also worked for Eolas Media, and latterly with Iomart prior to taking up her current post.

She studied for 5 years with the Open University whilst with the Harbour office and the Careers Service, graduating with a BSc (Hon’s) in Psychology and Social Science. Jane has been involved with youth work for over 12 years with Acres Boys Club, as secretary and Bridge Community Centre, as secretary and chairperson. In that time she also organised Miss Lewis & Harris for 8 consecutive years.

In looking forward to her challenging new role Jane said,
“I am very pleased to be able to offer encouragement, advice and assistance to young people interested in starting up their own businesses, and I look forward to raising the profile of youth enterprise throughout the islands”.

“We are delighted that Jane has been taken up this post. The appointment cements the Comhairle’s long-standing commitment to youth enterprise development, and I look forward to Jane continuing the excellent record of her predecessors over the past decade in this field.”

The aim of the PSYBT is to assist young people to start and continue their own businesses, with financial assistance, as well as the provision of a high-quality, professional Aftercare service.
