Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 19 December 2001 For Use: Immediately |

|
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is disappointed that the Report on Gaelic Broadcasting by the Education, Culture and Sport Committee of the Scottish Parliament contains a number of inconsistencies and inaccuracies. Praise for certain aspects of the work of CCG is tempered with misguided criticism of the organisation but this does not appear to be backed up with factual evidence and poses questions about the objectivity of the recommendations.
The report severely dents the aspirations of those actively involved in the desire to see the creation of a dedicated Gaelic television channel run by Gaels in a Gaelic heartland location and runs counter to the ethos of the Milne Task Force Report on Broadcasting. The criticism levelled at the Comhairles response to the Committee is strange given that the Comhairle was not in a position to provide the evidence requested.
Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr Roderick J Murray stated
We are very disappointed at the destructively critical tone adopted in the report
and we will be submitting a comprehensive response in due course. It is also
important that the aspirations of the independent producers should not be allowed
to dominate the Gaelic broadcasting debate at the current time to the detriment
of the other inhabitants in the Gaelic media village and others genuinely interested
in the welfare of the language.
