Waste
Aware Western Isles
In April 2005 Waste Aware Western Isles began a Pilot Kerbside Collection Scheme, in Stornoway. This was an opt-in scheme operating in two areas of the town. In all over 200 households elected to take part in the fortnightly collection.
Phase 1 of the collection was used to trial two different collection systems. One system, based on standard kerbside collection boxes provided householders with either a single 55 litre or two 44 litre containers. They could be divided, if required and were intended for the collection of glass and cans. Also provided was a Hessian bag for collecting paper and a disposable plastic bag to deposit plastics.
The weather in the Western Isles, especially in the winter period, can be brutal. With this in mind an alternative system was supplied to half the households on the scheme. Still providing the Hessian bag and plastic bag for paper and plastic respectively, two slim line containers were provided to collect glass and cans. These all fitted nicely into a standard 240 litre wheelie bin, keeping everything together and protecting them from the elements.
Following feedback from householders on the Pilot Scheme a decision was taken towards the end of the collection period as to which system was preferred. The wheelie bin system was preferred by the majority of householders. This system was subsequently offered to all households on the collection and will be used in future phases.
Following the success of the Pilot Scheme and the decision on the collection system to be used the scheme was expanded. Subsequent areas were added in phases from the initial pilot area throughout 2005 and 2006. The Pilot Kerbside Collection now covers the town of Stornoway and some of the surrounding districts.
The following streets and areas are now included in the scheme. Householders in these areas can register for the kerbside collection.
