Recycling Milk Bottle Tops

A new recycling project has now begun throughout Western Isles schools with 20 taking part so far. Schools are collecting milk top bottles which will be put to Stornoway Plastics, owned by Gordon Maclennan, where they will be made into items such as creels and hooks.

This began thanks to Anne Baird who was collecting the bottle tops for her nephews school in Hampshire a few years ago and due to donations from other locals and schools and high cost in postage, Anne decided it wasn’t cost effective to be sending these large amount of bottle tops off the Island so approached Stornoway Plastics to see if they could help.  Gordon agreed that they could make use of these in the local company, rather than them getting thrown to Landfill.

Since Anne started providing the materials to Gordon, she has donated the money made to local charities such as Western Isles Kidney Patients Association, Lewis Breast Cancer and many more.  She hopes to continue this, with the help of the local schools, as there is now high demand for the bottle tops down at Stornoway Plastics!

The schools that have already signed up to this have been provided with coloured bins and clear recycling bags to collect the tops.  If you would like to help by donating your milk tops, please contact Waste Aware on 709900 for more information or to find out your nearest school taking part.
