Biobag Trial
September 2008
A 3 month trial is underway in the Ness and Back / Coll areas to see if ‘Biobags’ will help increase the amount of Organic waste collected in by the Comhairle.
Survey work has been carried out over the months to find out the views the Islanders have on the Organic bin system, where a lot stated they would be more inclined to separate their Organic waste if there was sealable bags available to use for food waste, before putting it into the Organic bin. This would help prevent food spillages and bad odours.
As a result of these comments, the Comhairle took the suggestions on board and supplied households in Ness, Back and Coll with Biobags, for a trial period, to line their grey kitchen caddy, in the hope to encourage them to separate their food waste.
Biobags are compostable and unlike plastic bags, they will break down in the composting process and will not have a detrimental effect on the quality of the compost produced at the Creed Waste Plant, Lochs Road.
We are hoping the Biobags will be successful and make recycling food waste easier for householders in the Western Isles.
