Western Isles Residents Urged To Recycle Cards This Christmas

2010 Christmas Card Recycling Scheme Launched

As the countdown to Christmas gets well and truly underway, Waste Aware Scotland has again teamed up with the Woodland Trust Scotland to encourage people across  the Western Isles to recycle their Christmas cards.

Now in its thirteenth year, the annual Christmas Card Recycling Scheme will this year ask people in Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra to recycle their cards before visiting The Woodland Trust website at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/cards to choose which UK region they would like scheme funded trees planted in.

This year’s Christmas Card Recycling Scheme 2010 officially launches across the UK on Monday January 4th and runs until the end of the month. During that period, people across the Western Isles can either recycle cards at local branches of WH Smith, TK Maxx, and Marks and Spencer via special in-store Christmas card recycling bins or through their local kerbside collections and recycling centres and points.

This year, the scheme has a target to plant 12,000 native trees across the UK - an equivalent area of 24 Hampden Football pitches of woodland. Money to enable the Trust to plant trees is funded by the retail partners.

Welcoming this year’s campaign, Environment Minister Roseanna Cunningham said: “The Woodland Trust’s Christmas Card Recycling Scheme, with the backing of Waste Aware Scotland, gets bigger and better every year in raising awareness of the need to recycle our Christmas cards. I’d therefore urge everyone in the Western Isles to take part and ensure they recycle their cards. We all have a role to play in realising the vision of a Zero Waste Scotland and this scheme is a great example of how we can work towards achieving that vital goal.’’

Dr Nicki Souter, Waste Aware Scotland Campaign Manager, said: “Christmas is a time when we all tend to create more waste, so recycling Christmas cards as part of the Woodland Trust scheme is a simple way to help reduce the amount which ends up in landfill. Hopefully, this year’s scheme will again encourage many more residents to recycle more of their waste across the rest of the year.’’

Angela Douglas, Operations Director for Woodland Trust Scotland said: “Each year we value the wonderful support from everyone who recycles their Christmas cards with the trust, which makes a huge difference to our work! This is why we want to say a big thank you this year by giving people the opportunity to choose where their trees are planted.”
