Spring into action to clean up the Eilean Siar

Spring into action to clean up the Eilean Siar (PDF, 25K)

It’s just a month until Scotland’s largest volunteer litter pick, National Spring Clean, gets underway and Keep Scotland Beautiful can now reveal that almost 30,000 people have committed to pick up litter from an area close to their hearts – and more than 300 are from the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar area.

But we still need your help to celebrate the 5th birthday of National Spring Clean in style and volunteers from Eilean Siar are being reminded to register their litter picking events now so that Free clean up kits - containing everything you need to spruce up your local area, including black sacks, clear sacks for recyclable materials, tabards and information to support your event – can be posted out in time.

The campaign period has been extended this year so that volunteers can carry out litter picks in the last two weeks of March and the first two of May, and there are already four areas of Eilean Siar earmarked for a clean up.  Keep Scotland Beautiful is inviting people to either get involved in one of these events, or to choose a litter strewn location and register an event at http://springclean.keepscotlandtidy.org/

As an extra bonus Greggs has also generously pledged to provide volunteers with free caramel shortbread or gingerbread biscuits where possible as a reward for their hard work and if this isn’t an incentive enough, thanks to Wrigley 30 schools or nurseries taking part in National Spring Clean 2011 will be awarded £100 each in vouchers to spend on eco activities.

Donna Hegarty, Programme Manager for Keep Scotland Tidy said, “Our thanks go to all the volunteers who have already committed to picking up some litter this spring to return an area of the Western Isles, which they care about, to a litter free zone.

“But there are still a large number of unclaimed open spaces and we’d encourage everyone to consider helping out and making this year’s National Spring Clean the greatest ever – don’t leave it for someone else – grab a litter picker and join in!” Waste Aware Recycle Reuse Waste Aware Western Isles
