Reuse

Second of the 3R’s is Reuse. If it is not possible to Reduce then try Reuse rather than Recycling or throwing away. Here is a guide to some of the ways that you can Reuse more.

Buy Recycled – the obvious first step. Paper, glass plastics are all Recycled and available as new items. Some may not be obvious but some, like paper, are labelled as made from Recycled material. Check labelling on goods, many do have a “made from Recycled material” indication on them.

Food containers – can often be used over and over. Ice cream containers make ideal freezer boxes. Jars can be used to store jams or sauces made at home. There are a variety of options for packed lunch wrapping, all Reusing items. Many food containers can be Reused for storing food or other items, after all they stored food originally. Consider alternative uses for some items. Yogurt pots make ideal seed trays as starters for garden or house plants.

Packaging – can often be used again either as packaging or for storage. Gift wrapping can be used again if removed carefully. Boxes from electrical items make good strong storage boxes.

Paper – try writing or printing on both sides of the paper. Save paper that has been used once for scrap paper, note taking or having by the phone to write down numbers and messages.

Carrier bags – can be used several times by taking them to the shop with you. Better still use a strong plastic or textile bag that can be used again and again saving the need to take carrier bags.

Magazines – can find a number of alternative uses. Try swapping with friends, donate them to a surgery/dentist/waiting room or nursing home for others to use. Magazines also provide an excellent source of pictures for children to cut out and use in artwork or montages. Try giving them to charity shops or other organisations.

Envelopes – a simple but effective way to Reuse. Open mail carefully and you can use envelopes over again by applying a label with the address. And save yourself money on envelopes.

Textiles – also find a number of alternative uses. You could try selling them or if you prefer give them away to friends or charity shops. Textiles can also be used around the house for cleaning clothes etc. where the material is suitable. Why not think of an alternative use for clothes – who would have though cut-down jeans would be so fashionable?

Furniture – if repair is not an option then do not dispose of your furniture. Charity shops will often take furniture, some craftsmen will also look for items to restore or refurbish for sale. You can also remove parts for future or replacement use, items such as runners, knobs, castors etc.

Batteries – try using rechargeable batteries rather than disposable. The initial cost may be slightly more expensive but after a few charging cycles they will have paid for themselves.

Refill – many items in everyday use can be refilled. Print cartridges are a good example. Many products are becoming available in supermarkets in refillable containers such as fabric softeners and many others. Food items purchased loosely can easily be stored in containers until used.

Nappies – rather than use disposable nappies why not try Reusable cloth nappies. Modern nappies are bright, stylish and environmentally friendly. The disposable version is very wasteful and expensive leading to huge savings for those who decide to use the Reusable types. Have a look around at what is available in Real Nappies, you may be surprised.

Disposables – items should be avoided where possible. Cameras, razors, plates and a whole host of other items are available as disposable. There are very good Reusable alternatives that can be easily found in shops and supermarkets.

Have a look around and see what ideas you can come up with to Reuse items. Why not collect sawdust if you are doing jobs around the house. It can be used mixed with a little glue to cover nail holes in wood and the surplus can be used in cages for small pets bedding.
