Orienteering Success

On Saturday 10th December, Stornoway Running and Athletics Club held their Christmas Orienteering championships. Three of our pupils took part - Campbell, Catriona and Sarah. Now Campbell and Catriona are well used to winning on the Cross Country circuit but this time they had to find their own way to the checkpoints without the help of a marked course.

In this orienteering event, competitors were given a map with points marked on it. They had to work out where the points were in Stornoway Castle Grounds, visit them all, punch holes in a card to prove they had been there and run back to the start. The team to visit all the points in the shortest time wins.

So who won - Catriona, Campbell or Sarah? Catriona (running with Rebecca) and Campbell (running with Calum) can both run faster than Sarah so they should do better - shouldn't they? Well they ran fast but they ran all over the grounds without finding all the checkpoints! Sarah (with her partner Angus) ran fast and true - they found all the checkpoints and were first back to the finish line.

Well done Sarah!

Sarah and Angus head for the finish
Catriona and her partner Rebecca (usually her XC rival !) sprint to the finish with Ross in hot pursuit
Campbell and Calum may not have won but he looks like he still had a good time!
