RET Pilot Scheme

The Scottish Government’s RET (Road Equivalent Tariff) pilot scheme applies to all Western Isles mainland ferry routes and has led to significant reductions in the cost of ferry travel to and from the islands.

The RET pilot scheme started in October 2008 and covers the following routes for a proposed period of two years:

  • Ullapool – Stornoway
  • Uig - Tarbert (Harris)/Lochmaddy (North Uist)
  • Oban - Castlebay (Barra)
  • Oban to Lochboisdale (South Uist), Coll & Tiree

Online Survey

The Scottish Government is currently seeking to assess the effectiveness of the RET scheme. As part of this process, information is needed regarding the views of businesses that use ferry services in the Western Isles.  An online survey has been set up and can be accessed via  The survey is now online and will be open until 11 September 2009.
