Objectives
The main objectives of the Sports Council are- .to encourage co-operation and co-ordination between sports groups
.to assist in the formation of sports clubs
.to encourage school pupils and schoolleavers to participate in sport
.to promote or support competitions and sports events
.to promote sports coaching courses for young people
.to promote coach education courses
.to promote and encourage sporting links with the Uist & Barra Sports Council and other neighbouring Sports Councils.
Introduction
Uist & Barra Sports Council is an association of local sports clubs and organisations which works together with Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Enterprise and Western Isles Health Board to foster and develop sport in Uist & Barra.
Structure:
The Sports Council operates through an Executive Committee which is elected at the Annual General Meeting in September.
Two sub-committees:(a) Grant-aid & Finance; and (b) Sports Development & Events assist in the work of the Sports Council and make recommendations to the Executive Committee
The Executive Committee of the Sports Council is made up of a truly representative cross- section of the wide variety of sporting interests inUist & Barra. These volunteers, alongside elected members and officers of Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Enterprise and other bodies assist in the decision making process and disburse available funds in a prudent manner.
Membership:
All sports clubs and organisations who have a constitution and a democratically elected Committee are invited to affiliate to the Sports Council.
The annual fee for membership to the Sports Council is £10.
Benefits of Affiliation to the Uist & Barra Sports Council
Voice of Local Sport
As the voice of local sport in Uist & Barra, the Sports Council provides an advisory role to clubs, organisations, individuals, and public bodies such as ComhairleNan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Enterprise and Western Isles Health Board As a member of the Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils (SALSC), the Sports Council has the opportunity to voice and protect local interests at a national level.
Advice
The Sports Council provides information on other sources of funding for sport, including National Lotteryand Sportsmatch initiatives. Advice and support can also be given in applying for funding from other agencies.
Sports Development Projects/ Initiatives
The Sports Council seeks to support the development of locally based sports development projects and initiatives which may attract funding from agencies such as the Scottish Sports Council The Sports Council can provide advice and guidance on how to go about accessing such funds and setting up joint sports development initiatives
The Sports Council recognises the importance of quality coaching in the development of sport and promotes Coach Education at all levels, in conjunction with appropriate agencies.
Grant-Aid
The Executive Committee disburses grant- aid on behalf of Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar and Western Isles Enterprise. The grants policy is geared towards providing support to local sports clubs and organisations, and in certain circumstances to individual members of affiliated clubs.

Events
A number of coaching and competitive events are promoted through the Sports Council such as Coach Education Courses, Come & Try Events, and Competitions
. The programme incorporates activities organised by the Sports Council in conjunction with local clubs and governing bodies of sport .
The Sports Council encourages clubs to stage events by offering financial assistance, administration and volunteer resources.
