Advice to Consumers

The function of Trading Standards is to protect consumers  and support businesses and to encourage a fair and safe trading environment in the Western Isles. We do this by advising businesses, inspecting trade premises, testing equipment, sampling goods and investigating complaints.

If you require advice regarding goods or services then in the first instance you should visit the Citizens Advice Consumer Service (Opens in a new window or downloads a file)  website or call them on 03454 04 05 06 (Formerly known as Consumer Direct).

The Citizens Advice Consumer Service operates Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00pm  and provides clear practical advice to help consumers sort out problems and disagreements with suppliers of goods and services.

If your complaint requires further investigation it may be referred on to Trading Standards who will give you advice on consumer law and give you practical advice on how to pursue the complaint yourself. If you are unable to resolve the problem Trading Standards can give advice and information, investigate disputes, contact traders on your behalf, recommend remedial action or take enforcement action if appropriate.

We hope to resolve disputes fairly, reasonably, quickly and informally, usually within 14 days of having received all the necessary information. However, the services we provide are subject to legal and council guidelines. We do not have powers to force traders to provide repairs, replacements or to give refunds, but if appropriate we are able to give advice about how to pursue your complaint through the Civil Courts Simple Procedure or through a relevant arbitration scheme or alternative dispute resolution process.  If Trading Standards are unable to assist we will direct you to the best agency who can help with your complaint.
