An Taigh-Sholas - Outer Hebrides Bairns Hoose
In October 2023, the Outer Hebrides became one of the six Scottish Government Bairns’
Hoose Pathfinders Partnerships. This meant we were provided with funding and
support to test the Bairns’ Hoose Standards, which outline the requirements for each
Bairns’ Hoose in order to test out a potential proposal for a national model throughout
Scotland.
The Bairns’ Hoose Standards are underpinned by the United Nations Convention on the
Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and align with key policy of Keeping the Promise and
Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC).
In recognition of the unique culture and use of the Gaelic language within the Outer
Hebrides, a group of children and young people were consulted and chose ‘An Taigh-
Sholas’, meaning The Lighthouse, as the name for the Outer Hebrides Bairns’ Hoose.
