Ardveenish Harbour, Port Hand Buoy, Light extinguished

Mariners are advised that a Red Port Hand Buoy light is extinguished on the approaches to Ardveenish.

Date:  18th Septemebr 2025
Location:  Ardveenish Harbour, Isle of Barra

The Harbour Authority would like to remind all mariners that floating and fixed Aids to Navigation (AToN), such as buoys, beacons and lights, are provided as an aid to navigation only.

While every effort is made to ensure their reliability, faults can and do occasionally occur. Mariners are therefore reminded of their obligation under the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) and good seamanship practice to:

  • Navigate with due caution at all times, making full use of all available means including charts, radar, echo sounder and GPS.
  • Never rely solely on a single buoy or light for positional awareness.
  • Take into account the possibility that an AToN may be unlit, off station, or missing.

We continue to monitor and maintain our AToN network, and any outage is reported and rectified as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your vigilance and for reporting any defects to the Harbour Office as soon as they are noticed.
Safe navigation is a shared responsibility.
