Callanish Village

Callanish Village 30mph speed limit temporary order.

Statement of Reasons

At present there is a national speed limit on the Callanish village road leading up to the Standing Stones and the Callanish Visitor Centre. During the tourist season there is a higher volume of traffic on the village road including coach tours. There is a lined footpath on the Callanish Pier Road but there is no footpath provision on the remainder of the village road.

The Callanish Visitor Centre is currently undergoing major renovation works which has led to the existing bus and car park being shut until the project has been completed in 2026.

This closure is affecting traffic flows within the village as visitors park and approach the Stones from various directions.

The introduction of a temporary 30mph speed limit during the construction phase, for a period of 18 months, will increase safety for pedestrians and other road users during this time.

The roads affected are:

  1. Callanish West Road from the A858 south of the Free Church in a westerly direction and then southerly to join Pier Road with a northerly branch to turning point at No 37 Callanish.
  2. Callanish Pier Road from the A858 at the Telephone Exchange westerly to turning point at Callanish Farmhouse.
  3. Callanish Loop Road from the Callanish Pier Road northerly and easterly to rejoin the A858.
