Early Learning And Childcare

A good start - children at play

A Good Start

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has a statutory duty to provide a funded early learning and childcare place for all children from the school term following their third birthday until they reach school age.  A place will usually consist of 600 hours, provided at 15 hours 50 minutes each week for 38 weeks each year.

We offer free places at local authority run nurseries and in registered centres in the private and voluntary sectors in partnership with the Comhairle.  Gaelic and English providers are available.  Our leaflet below gives full details of eligibility dates, providers throughout the islands, and the curriculum they deliver.  Parents should contact the provider of their choice in the first instance to apply for a place.

From August 2014 some two year olds will also eligible for a funded early learning and childcare place if parents/carers are in receipt of certain benefits.  The application form for these places is below.  For further information please contact the Early Years team on 01851 822655 or your local Jobcentre Plus office.

A list of the registered providers in the Western Isles is also available from the Family Information Service.
