 I wish to acquire the following information under the Freedom of Information Act (2002):  

  • How many members of staff teach swimming lessons to children at primary and secondary school ages (5-16) both during and after school time?
  • How much funding does the council provide to teach swimming lessons to children aged 5-16 both in and after school times?
  • How many children have signed up for after school swimming lessons?
  • How many hours of swimming lessons are provided to children between 5 and 16?
  • The percentage of pupils in P4 to P7 to S2 that reach each swimming level and the recommended level?

Answer

How many members of staff teach swimming lessons to children at primary and secondary school ages (5-16) both during and after school time?
Level 2 Swim Teachers  16
Level 1 Swim Teachers  10
Total; - 26  (Total does not include Secondary PE teachers who deliver swim teaching as part of the school curriculum).

How much funding does the council provide to teach swimming lessons to children aged 5-16 both in and after school times?
Swim teaching is part of core duties of contracted leisure staff; they receive an additional hourly payment whilst teaching swimming in recognition of their qualifications. All Secondary level swim teaching is provided by PE staff within the school curriculum.

How many children have signed up for after school swimming lessons?
328  (All swim teaching in Barra is delivered within the school curriculum)

How many hours of swimming lessons are provided to children between 5 and 16?
39 hours per week.

The percentage of pupils in P4 to P7 to S2 that reach each swimming level and the recommended level?
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have a partnership agreement with Scottish Swimming, the national governing body for the sport. We implemented the national ‘Learn To Swim’ programme in April 2017. Evaluation data will be available in due course as the new assessment criteria embeds.
