Access Programme

The Western Isles Countryside Access Programme was established in April 2004 and ran for three years. The aim of the Programme was to upgrade approximately 195km of paths throughout the Western Isles.

The programme was led by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and jointly funded by Scottish Natural Heritage (Opens in a new window or downloads a file), Highlands & Islands Enterprise (Opens in a new window or downloads a file), the Comhairle and the Highlands and Islands Special Transitional Programme.

The paths ranged from mountain routes, requiring a high degree of fitness and mountain awareness, to shorter routes around settlements and through flat machair land.

Improvements included upgrades to drainage, construction of bridges, surfacing, gates and the provision of signage and waymarking where appropriate.
