Stornoway Town Hall
An outstanding local landmark, Stornoway Town Hall is of central importance in the history of Stornoway’s civic life, and stands as an iconic building on one of the most prominent sites in Stornoway. After a number of years of ongoing repairs and changing uses, it was clear that a more comprehensive approach to the continuing use and restoration of the building was required. An ideal opportunity to implement this presented itself with the approval of the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) for the centre of Stornoway, a local funding partnership between Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland worth £2.1m.
The repair and restoration works have been based on the original design and features of the building. A major part of restoring the character of the main hall has been achieved by reinstatement of fourteen original rooflights providing natural lighting to the interior. In addition removal of the permanent stage allows the three stained glass, leaded windows in the west gable to be revealed, providing additional natural light. A further benefit was the creation of a new access to Carn Gardens.
However in recognition of the importance the Town Hall plays in Stornoway civic society, and to address public concerns, a demountable stage is also available to allow the continuation of stage and other productions. Enhanced lighting and sound systems will complement any production. Retention of as much of the original architecture and fabric of the Town Hall as possible was a fundamental aim of the project. It will serve to promote, sustain and enhance the cultural traditions and heritage of the islands signposting visitors and residents alike to attractions and events over all the islands and will ensure a sustainable future for the building
The Town Hall restoration has created a flexible and accessible building for multi purpose use and offers mixed complementary services. In addition the Town Hall accommodates other services including the Comhairle’s Customer Services team and administrative support functions.
The main hall and balcony area offer flexible space for meetings, exhibitions, theatrical performances, craft fairs, etc. The restored building will bring increased activity to the town centre with the Town Hall becoming a resource incorporating information and advice on council and other services as well as a location for a range of business and social activities.
The flooring of the balcony area provides a flexible function. In response to popular demand three rows of original balcony seating have been retained to accommodate more popular stage productions.
