Cost of Living Support
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has launched a scheme to assist community groups support households with the Cost of Living Crisis.
The Comhairle has identified funding of £475,000 to support community groups’ work to assist with the current cost-of living pressures. Whilst some of this support will be by way of direct payments to low-income households and those in receipt of Council Tax Reductions, Comhairle Members and community groups have also highlighted other initiatives which would provide valuable support within communities. This could be through support for foodbanks, provision of vouchers, warm spaces for people to meet up, meals etc.
The Comhairle is also to receive a welcome additional £360,000 from the Scottish Government’s Islands Emergency Cost Crisis Fund. This will be added to the Comhairle’s Cost of Living Support, to make the support go further and last longer.
Cllr Paul Steele, Leader of the Comhairle, said:
“Many people in our communities are suffering as a result of the Cost of Living crisis. The Comhairle wants to provide support where we can and I would encourage community groups running support schemes, to apply to this fund. This is a hand up not a hand out and it is right that people should ask for support where they need it.”
