Overview
The role of Trading Standards is focused on protecting consumers and helping honest businesses to succeed by ensuring a safe and equitable market place exists across the Western Isles. The team is responsible for enforcing a wide range of legislation and use an intelligence led approach to assess local complaints, national trends and emerging issues. Our authorised officers may also conduct market surveillance activities such as carrying out routine inspections to trade premises, examining items for sale, testing trade equipment, undertaking test purchases or even taking samples of goods.
The team regularly provide advice to businesses on trading standards legislation, assist vulnerable people with consumer issues and where required investigate complaints about businesses or individuals where alleged criminal offences have taken place.
